Vision Zero Braintree

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) delivered a coordinated Vision Zero day of action in Braintree, combining enforcement, engagement and community partnership working to tackle high-risk driving and support safer roads for everyone.

Community Speed Watch- Black Notley

Three Community Speed Watch site visits were carried out during the day.

The day began with a visit to Community Speed Watch on Witham Road, Black Notley, strengthening the partnership approach to tackling speeding locally.

Enforcement Headlines

A total of 145 offences were recorded by Essex Police across enforcement sites including:

  • Braintree-  Rayne Road, A1053, Cressing Road.
  • Witham- three sites (highest 56mph in a 30mph limit.)
  • A12 Terling Hall – highest 94mph whilst undertaking.
  • Black Notley.
  • Rayne Road, Witham – highest 44mph in a 30mph limit.

Key outcomes:

  • 12 mobile phone offences.
  • 15 seatbelt offences.
  • One drug drive arrest.
  • One roadside eyesight test passed.
  • One arrest on warrant (burglary 2025 and common assault 2023) following a stop for a seatbelt offence and the vehicle seized.
  • One disqualified driver identified via live scan after providing false details- vehicle seized and reported for disqualified driving, no insurance, obstruction and dangerous vehicle condition (illegal window tints.)
  • One driver using a tablet while driving.
  • Two drivers reading books/notes while driving.

Library and High Street Engagement

The engagement team spoke with 147 residents across Braintree Library and the High Street.

A total of 21 businesses were visited, including Saffron Building Society, the Post Office, Patrick and Menzies Opticians, Specsavers, cafes, estate agents, solicitors and charity shops- widening the reach of Vision Zero messaging.

Community Support

Across Witham and surrounding areas, officers were met with positive feedback from residents, with several expressing appreciation for visible enforcement in response to speeding concerns.

Supporting Vision Zero

The Braintree day of action reflects the Vision Zero commitment to eliminating road deaths and serious injuries by 2040 or sooner. By combining enforcement, education and community partnership, the SERP continues to tackle the behaviours most likely to cause harm-  including speeding, distraction, impairment and seatbelt non-compliance.

Residents are encouraged to continue reporting concerns to help shape future enforcement activity.
