Operation Vision Zero Colchester

Engagement, education, and enforcement across the city

Yesterday, The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP), alongside enforcement partners, carried out a major Vision Zero engagement and enforcement event across Colchester, reinforcing the shared ambition to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads.

Supporting young drivers and safer communities

A key focus of the day was speaking to residents about the ongoing central government young driver consultation which looks at mandatory requirements for learner drivers and raising awareness of Vision Zero.

Teams visited Monkwick Infants, Juniors and High School, where parents and carers welcomed the presence of road safety officers and the Parking Partnership. Many commented that it made them feel safer and encouraged more responsible driving around the school gates.

During a school speed watch at Cherry Tree School, 15 drivers were stopped for speeding, with the fastest recorded at 40mph in a 30mph limit, highlighting the continued importance of visible enforcement to protect children and families.

Reaching hundreds across Colchester

Engagement teams spoke directly with 332 people and visited 48 local businesses and community locations, including Colchester Castle, the Mercury Theatre, Colchester Library, estate agents, opticians, shops, and cafés. Driving With Confidence, The SERP’s mature driver course, had materials distributed to local venues, helping extend the reach of road safety messaging across the city.

Targeted enforcement tackling the Fatal Four

Enforcement activity addressed the four most dangerous behaviours most likely to lead to fatal collisions- speeding, drink and drug driving, distraction and not wearing a seatbelt. Numerous tickets were issued, including for 27 seatbelt offences, 12 mobile phone offences, and reports for dangerous vehicle condition and drivers not in proper control of their vehicle.

Speed enforcement teams also carried out operations across seven key locations including Boxted, Dedham, Heckfordbridge and central Colchester, detecting 58 speeding offences.

Working together towards Vision Zero

Operation Vision Zero demonstrates the power of education, engagement and enforcement working together to reduce risk and protect communities. By speaking with residents, supporting schools, engaging businesses and targeting high-risk behaviours, partners are taking action to prevent harm before it happens.

Vision Zero represents Essex’s commitment to a future where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads. Every conversation, every intervention, and every enforcement action helps move us closer to that aspiration.
