Getting to your destination safely is our priority.
The Highway Code
The Highway Code changed in January 2022, giving more priority to vulnerable road users, and ensuring drivers are showing even more caution.
These helpful videos provide up-to-date advice on how to safely navigate these changes, including junctions, and overtaking.
Our top ten tips for drivers:
- Plan your journey. Before you start driving check the traffic, plan your route and set up your car including emergency kit. Plan regular breaks.
- Leave enough time. Lots of collisions and speeding is often put down to being in a rush. We all have busy lives but leave enough time to get to your destination without speeding.
- Before any long journey check your car. Here’s some checks from RAC 12 simple car checks to help prevent a breakdown and keep you safe | RAC Drive
- Think about what distracts you. Put mobile phones away, headphones out, eat before your journey, give the kids games to play with. Place your phone onto “do not disturb” when using as sat nav.
- How well do you know the updated Highway Code? For example, did you know that cars need to give way to pedestrians crossing the road?
- Take weather conditions and lighting into account for both your driving and stopping distances.
- Ensure your car’s MOT and insurance are in date.
- Pay attention to road signs and other road users.
- Be considerate of all road users.
