51 Miles for 51 Lives: the SERP joins RoadPeace challenge to honour Essex road victims

As part of the RoadPeace Challenge 2025 and UN Global Road Safety Week, Will Cubbin, Partnership Manager for The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP), cycled 51 miles to commemorate the 51 people who lost their lives on Essex roads last year.

The challenge, launched by national charity RoadPeace, encourages individuals and organisations to take on a physical activity in memory of those killed or seriously injured in road collisions, while raising awareness of the need for safer streets. During his 51-mile route, Will visited eight sites across Essex where fatal collisions occurred in 2024, pausing at each to reflect on the lives lost.

Will said: “During this cycle ride, I contemplated the everyday journeys Essex residents were making; going to work, school, or visiting family and for the 51 who died last year, they never came home. Every number is a person, a family devastated, a future stolen. A big thank you to Essex and Herts Air Ambulance for the much-needed water stop and for showcasing their incredible life-saving equipment and training at their North Weald base.”

The RoadPeace Challenge runs all week (13–19 May) and the SERP is encouraging everyone- individuals, schools, businesses and community groups, to get involved in any way they can. Whether it’s walking, running, cycling, or simply sharing stories, the campaign is a powerful way to highlight the daily tragedy of road death and the urgent need for change.

This challenge aligns with Vision Zero, the SERP’s commitment to eliminating deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads by 2040. It underlines the core message that no death on our roads is acceptable, and that it is within our power to prevent them through education, engineering, and enforcement.
