Officers and staff from the Safer Essex Roads Partnership surrounded Harwich on Thursday, July 11, in a bid to drive down unnecessary road death and injury.

During the day, almost 70 offences were detected including mobile phone use, speeding, not wearing seatbelts and two vehicles were seized for not having insurance.

Three drivers were arrested after failing drugs testing at the roadside, one of which was wanted for other drugs offences.

Samantha Wright, Road Crime and Safer Essex Roads Operational Co-Ordinator, said: “The team worked really hard during the operation day and gave an additional focus on older drivers.

“Officers conducted 13 eyesight tests during the day, one of which failed and was unable to drive home. We engaged with scores of older drivers and used it as an opportunity to promote our free Driving with Confidence course, which helps keep older drivers driving safely, for longer.

“Pupils from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School took part in speed watch outside the school area, and we were really pleased to see every driver driving within the speed limit. The children used the time to learn about how they can keep themselves safe when walking to and from school. “
