This week, the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) continued its mission toward Vision Zero, the commitment to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries in Essex by 2040- through a mix of enforcement, education, and community engagement.
Education in Action
Our road safety team delivered practical pedestrian safety sessions to Year 5 pupils at Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School, where pupils applied the Green Cross Code, learned to identify safer places to cross, and discussed avoiding distractions.
At Thameside Primary in Grays, 107 pupils took part in road safety training and the school formally pledged its support for Vision Zero.
To mark Child Safety Week, further sessions were delivered to over 200 pupils at Tudor Court, Deneholm, Cherry Tree, and Oakfield Primary Schools, covering key topics such as pedestrian awareness and staying alert and distraction-free near roads
At Cherry Tree Primary, 11 speeding drivers were stopped during School Speed Watch, one of whom fled after being recorded at 50mph in a 30mph limit.
Meanwhile, at Deneholm Primary, 60 pupils participated in roadside observations, where three drivers were stopped. Two chose to speak with pupils directly about their actions, while the third accepted the penalty.
Canvey Island Vision Zero Day
The team headed to Canvey Island for a community-focused Vision Zero Day.
Alongside roadside enforcement tackling risky driving, our education team visited 29 businesses, schools, and nurseries, engaged with 126 local residents and collected multiple new Vision Zero pledges
Notable stops included Castle Point Golf Club, Canvey Model Engineering Club, and William Reed Primary School.
Canvey Vision Zero Enforcement Highlights
- 13 seatbelt offences
- 12 mobile phone offences
- 7 uninsured drivers
- 5 vehicles with no MOT
- 4 vehicles with construction and use issues
- 9 vehicle seizures
- 1 private e-scooter seized from a teenager
- 17 roadside eyesight tests
Operation Limit- Brentwood and Surrounding Areas
As part of Operation Limit, which works on targeting high-risk driver behaviours, including excess speed and impaired driving, the team focused on Brentwood and neighbouring areas.
Despite wet weather slowing activity at times, the results were stark:
- 153 traffic offences
- 16 vehicle seizures
- 15 arrests
- 350 speeding offences
Community Speed Watch (CSW)
Multiple CSW locations were supported this week including Wakes Colne and Broomfield, where seven speeding drivers were stopped near a school. One was riding a power two-wheeler without gloves or appropriate protective gear- prompting equipment and road safety advice.
Engaging Rural Communities
Our engagement team also attended the Young Farmers County Show, speaking to over 100 attendees about road safety, shared responsibility, and the importance of rural road awareness.
Every Action Matters
From every conversation, school session, and enforcement stop, we’re building momentum toward a safer Essex.
