Safer Roads in Action- Weekly Highlights

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) has been busy right across Essex, supporting communities, tackling speeding, and speaking with thousands of residents about road safety.

Puppy Power
We were joined by another four-legged recruit this week; a very cute puppy who helped us check speeds at Radwinter Avenue. Our recruit kept speed on a short leash and maintained a “paws-itive” attitude to road safety.

Enforcement in the North
Our focus began in the north of the county, with high-visibility patrols in rural communities including Saffron Walden and Maldon. We also visited Community Speed Watch volunteers in Great Chesterford to provide support before moving on to enforcement.

  • 10 offences were captured in Great Chesterford.
  • 11 offences in Newport later in the day.
  • Across the north, a total of 28 offences were recorded.

Bank Holiday South Activity
On Bank Holiday Monday the team moved south, covering Basildon, Wickford, and Billericay. Enforcement took place at South Mayne, Broad Mayne, Radwinter Avenue, Ashlyns, Noaks Bridge and Queens Park Drive. A Ford Transit was clocked at 73mph in a 30mph zone on Radwinter Avenue, a stark reminder of why the SERP’s work on Essex roads is so vital.

  • 105 offences were captured in the south

In total this week, 273 offences were recorded across four days of enforcement activity.

What the community said
The SERP value hearing from residents at the roadside. This week, comments from local communities included:

  • “So good to see you here so regularly, it can only lead to change, I am sure.”
  • “You can see drivers slowing down, hopefully they will think twice about speeding in future, guessing you could be anywhere at any time.”

Clacton Air Show Engagement

On Thursday and Friday, the team joined thousands of visitors at the Clacton Air Show. Over two days, they engaged with a record 1,700+ people of all ages.

The team shared advice on road safety including:

  • Extra Eyes and how dashcam footage can help keep roads safe.
  • Tips for parents and families on keeping children safe as pedestrians, including the importance of bright, visible clothing.
  • Guidance for young people starting their journey towards driving.

The team included partners Essex Fire at the event, and it was fantastic to see so many visitors pledging their support for Vision Zero – the shared goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads.

Another busy but rewarding week for the team, with strong enforcement, great community engagement, and positive feedback that shows how visible presence really does make a difference.
