Grays Vision Zero Day: Tackling Risky Roads and Empowering Communities

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) and Essex Police took to the streets of Grays for a Vision Zero Day, combining enforcement and engagement to challenge unsafe driving behaviours and promote road safety across the community.

Enforcement Activity

The police presence was both visible and welcomed by local councillors and residents, with officers actively reinforcing key road safety messages throughout the day.

Offences recorded included:

  • 32 drivers stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.
  • 6 mobile phone offences detected.
  • 67 speeding offences reported across five sites-  including one HGV travelling at 44mph in a 30mph limit.
  • 5 uninsured vehicles seized.
  • 1 vehicle keeper reported for allowing a friend to drive his BMW without insurance.

Public Engagement

The SERP engagement team connected with over 500 members of the community, including businesses and residents, to raise awareness of the Fatal Four: speeding, distraction, no seatbelt, and drink/drug driving. Engagement on the ground resulted in several new Vision Zero pledge sign-ups, with overwhelmingly positive feedback on the collaborative effort.

Pedestrian Safety for Pupils

Earlier in the day, 75 Year 5 pupils at Purfleet Primary School took part in pedestrian training. They explored safe crossing points, talked about the rise in electric vehicles, and learned how to stay alert near roads. Many pupils showed great awareness of their local Toucan Crossing, shared with both pedestrians and cyclists.

Classic Car Conversations

The team attended the Jaguar Classic Car Show, engaging visitors in road safety conversations and further promoting the Vision Zero message.

Our Commitment to Vision Zero

The SERP’s Vision Zero ambition aims to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries in Essex by 2040. Days like this highlight the importance of combining enforcement with education to make lasting changes in public behaviour.
