Keeping Essex Roads Safer- One Conversation, One Check, One Action at a Time

Despite the heat, the SERP continued to show up last week; collaborate, and deliver targeted action that supports our Vision Zero ambition- no deaths or serious injuries on Essex roads by 2040.

Community Engagement in Clacton

The team headed to Clacton’s seafront for one of several summer safety events. In the hot sunshine, beach huts were converted into pop-up safety hubs and the team sparked conversations with locals about all things road safety- from staying visible, to making safer choices behind the wheel.

Targeted Roadside Enforcement – Eight Days of Impact

In just eight days, the SERP enforcement team captured 616 speeding offences across Essex. From Harwich to Loughton, roadside visibility was high, feedback from the public was overwhelmingly positive. While most drivers were driving responsibly, those that weren’t were held accountable for their risky behaviour on the road.

Offences include:

  • Harwich (Oakley Road): 36 offences in one day, with 15 more at surrounding sites. Residents expressed appreciation for the increased presence.
  • Takeley, Great Dunmow, Stansted Mountfitchet: 226 offences, including speeds up to 48mph in 30mph limit.
  • Beaulieu Parkway, Chelmsford: 141 offences in just a few hours, including alarming speeds of up to 60mph in a 40mph limit.
  • Great Bromley and Elmstead Market: 13 offences.
  • Pilgrims Hatch and Shenfield: 28 offences, with one vehicle clocked at 51mph in a 30mph.
  • A414 (Commonside Road and Station Road): 74 offences recorded.
  • Ramsden Heath, Bicknacre and South Woodham Ferrers: 11 offences, all in 30mph areas, with the highest speed of 40mph.
  • Loughton, Chigwell, and surrounding villages: 72 offences captured, highest speed 46mph, all in 30mph limits.

A huge thank you to the enforcement team for their relentless work- especially in the sweltering heat, and to the public for their kind words and support at the roadside.

Together, through enforcement, education, and engagement, we’re making steady progress toward safer communities across Essex.
