Enforcement Update: Operation Limit Targets Drink and Drug Drivers

Partners of The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP), Essex Police,  continued their work to tackle risky driving through Operation Limit, a targeted enforcement operation focusing on drink driving, drug driving, and other serious road traffic offences.

Last weekend marked the fifth Operation Limit this year, with officers concentrating activity across the Castle Point and Rochford districts. The operation supports the wider work of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) and their shared Vision Zero ambition- to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads.

During the operation, officers detected 133 offences, the majority relating to excess speed. Speed enforcement identified a further 149 speeding offences in 30mph limits, highlighting the ongoing risk posed by drivers exceeding speed limits in residential areas.

In addition, eight vehicles were seized for offences including driving without insurance or without a valid driving licence.

A Targeted Approach to Drink and drug driving

The operation also resulted in 18 arrests, with 16 linked to drink or drug driving offences. With drug driving in the county continuing to be a concern, Essex Police is adopting a zero-tolerance approach, with trained officers using roadside drug wipes, to tackle impaired driving.

Supporting Vision Zero

Operations like this are a key part of Essex’s Vision Zero approach, which combines enforcement, education, and engagement to reduce the behaviours most likely to lead to serious collisions.

Drink driving, drug driving and speeding are among the Fatal Four factors most closely linked to deaths and serious injuries on our roads. By proactively targeting these offences, officers are working to prevent harm and make Essex’s roads safer for everyone.
