The SERP Weekly Round-Up: Supporting Safer Roads Through Education and Enforcement

As part of our continued commitment to Vision Zero—eliminating deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads, the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) was out in Pitsea this week, delivering a focused day of action combining both enforcement and education.

While the majority of drivers demonstrated safe and responsible behaviour, the enforcement team unfortunately still identified a number of high-risk road offences:

  • 12 drivers were stopped for excess speed.
  • Six were found using mobile phones at the wheel.
  • 44 individuals were not wearing seat belts.
  • Three were driving without insurance.
  • Six were stopped for careless driving.

In addition, 20 drivers were required to undergo roadside eyesight tests, forming part of our proactive efforts to ensure all road users meet basic fitness-to-drive standards.

Illegal e-scooter concerns also featured, with two seized by officers—one being ridden by a child and another by an adult. E-scooters remain illegal to use in any public place, including roads and pavements, unless they are part of an approved trial.

Throughout the day, the team engaged with drivers and pedestrians at the roadside to offer tailored advice, promote safe habits, and highlight the personal responsibility every road user holds. This collaborative approach is vital to achieving Vision Zero.

Every offence represents a behaviour that could lead to death or serious injury on Essex roads, which is why we continue to combine visible enforcement with meaningful education. Together, we can build safer roads for all.
