Vision Zero Wickford Round-Up

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) delivered a high-impact Vision Zero day of enforcement and engagement across Wickford, reinforcing the shared commitment to improving road safety and tackling risky driving behaviours.

Enforcement activity from Essex Police officers took place across three sites, with 48 drivers stopped and spoken to about the Fatal Four offences. This resulted in three drug drive arrests, seven uninsured vehicles seized, and one illegal e-scooter seized.

Officers also issued 41 seatbelt offences, with an arrest for an outstanding theft offence driver that was originally stopped for not wearing a seatbelt. There was also 18 mobile phone offences, and a range of other vehicle-related issues including no MOTs, illegal number plates, unsafe vehicle conditions, and excessive window tints.

The Ramsden Heath Community Speed Watch was outside the Downham CofE School, where they recorded 26 vehicles at 36mph and above, five vehicles exceeding 40mph and a top speed of 45mph in a 30mph limit,

Alongside enforcement, strong multi-agency engagement activity took place, with partners working together to deliver education and reassurance in local communities, which included targeted school engagement and parking enforcement activity.

At North Crescent Primary School, the engagement team spoke with pupils and parents on pedestrian safety. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many welcoming the focus on road safety and expressing relief that action is being taken. Concerns around speeding remained a key theme, particularly around the 20mph limit, which had been ignored by some drivers, whose speed choices created an unnecessary risk in a school area.

Across the high street and enforcement locations, the team engaged with 22 businesses and almost 400 members of the public. Conversations focused on young driver risks, speeding, drug driving, and the wider Essex Safer Speed Strategy, which aims to create safer, greener and healthier communities.

Across all locations, the public showed appreciation for the visible enforcement presence and the focus on risky and poor driving. The day highlighted the value of coordinated enforcement and education in making Wickford’s roads safer.

Every Vision Zero day brings Essex one step closer to a future where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.
