As the Essex Roads Policing Team hit the ground running this week, targeted enforcement and unpredictable visibility proved once again to be powerful tools—not just for offences, but for encouraging lasting positive behaviour change on our roads.
Despite most drivers sticking to the speed limit and driving safely, officers recorded just under 400 offences over the week of action.
On Tuesday, enforcement in Basildon saw 99 offences recorded and strong community engagement. There was a mid-week focus on repeat speed offenders in Elsenham and surrounding areas including the A120 and Great Dunmow, where officers, alongside Community Speed Watch volunteers, recorded 91 offences. Thursday’s patrols covered five sites, from Margaretting to Loughton, highlighting vulnerable areas near schools and known collision sites, with 84 offences recorded and notable support from residents. The team’s weekend enforcement on Saturday took officers to Benfleet, Rayleigh Road, Canvey, and Basildon, where 104 offences were detected.
This week’s key takeaway
While 400 offences were captured, officers observed that most drivers were respecting speed limits and driving safely. Visible enforcement continues to remind people of their responsibility to drive safely and within the speed limit.
