As a young driver, My Car, My Rules puts you in the driving seat when it comes to your safety.

It’s a way for you to have control of your car, space and decisions making, as a newly qualified driver and young adult. It will set solid ground rules that empower you to say no when you're not comfortable, such as limiting passengers and speeding.

It is about protecting your freedom to drive, not restricting it.

You’re in control

Driving gives you freedom, but it also makes you responsible for the safety of your friends and family.

My Car, My Rules helps young drivers set clear boundaries with passengers, making it easier to stay focused behind the wheel.

🔹 Put your safety first, even if it means saying “no” to pressure from friends
🔹 Agree limits on things like passengers, late-night driving, and distractions
🔹 Use the downloadable My Car, My Rules template to set out your personal boundaries and share them with others

How it works

1️⃣ Download the template (Safe Start or My Car, My Rules).
2️⃣ Fill it in together, as a family or as a young driver setting your own boundaries.
3️⃣ Keep it visible, on the fridge, in the car, or saved on your phone as a reminder.
4️⃣ Review regularly, update as confidence and experience grow.

Safe Start

My Car, My Rules gives you control as the driver, but Safe Start has your back, too.

It's a family agreement that helps take the pressure off the first few months of driving. Things like limiting late driving and making sure you get practice in different conditions. It's not about your parents taking away your freedom, it's about giving you time to build your skills safely, so you feel more confident behind the wheel.

The bigger picture

Road collisions are not just statistics, they have life-changing consequences for families, friends, and communities. By taking small steps, such as setting boundaries and having honest conversations, we can all play our part in keeping young drivers and their passengers safe.
