During the Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s (SERP) Basildon Vision Zero Day, 127 offences were recorded, including 91 speeding offences and 36 seatbelt and mobile phone offences. One e-scooter was seized, and two drivers were arrested for drug driving.
The day saw targeted outreach at the enforcement site, where the team spoke to 71 drivers and passengers, creating positive dialogues around speed limits, seatbelts, and driver distractions.
At St Anne Line School, the team spoke to around 43 parents during the morning drop off. The students took part in a School Speed Watch, identifying 11 speeding drivers, with a top speed of 37mph in a 30mph area. One driver was also reported for not wearing a seatbelt and others noted how impactful it was having schoolchildren confront them over their driving behaviour.
The team also visited local sixth forms and colleges, including South Essex College Basildon Campus, The Basildon Upper Academy, Harris Academy Wickford, Beauchamps Wickford and Harris Academy Billericay.
The day demonstrated how education, engagement and enforcement can work together to make roads safer.
The SERP continues to work towards Vision Zero, our ambition that no one should be killed or seriously injured on Essex roads.
