What is Project EDWARD?

Project Edward is an initiative run by TISPOL (Traffic Information System POLice – the European traffic police network), with the vision of achieving a European Day Without A Road Death.

Around 1700-1800 people lose their lives on British roads each year, so the vision of zero road deaths may seem unobtainable, but virtually every single one could have been avoided with a small change in how the people involved use the road.

Project EDWARD began in 2016 and proved to be a brilliant road safety awareness-raiser; #ProjectEDWARD was trending on Twitter in many countries and featured in the top 50 trending topics globally and also featured in Twitter’s ‘Moments’ section, which presents the most important topics happening at a particular time. There were 7,923 Twitter posts, with a unique reach of 19,298,225.

Project Edward encourages all road users to think about what they can do to avoid becoming involved in a fatal road traffic collision. Everyone is welcome to sign up and make a pledge to make the roads safer. Pledges could include sticking to the speed limit, always obeying traffic signals, never driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, taking extra care around vulnerable road users, avoiding distractions (such as mobile phones), paying full attention to the road, wearing proper safety equipment (helmets/seatbelts etc.), or making sure their vehicle is fully roadworthy.

So please sign this year’s pledge and follow @projectEDWARD on Twitter. Put Thursday 21 September in your diary, and make sure you do something amazing for road safety on that day!

You can even make a video pledge, and the SERP have done just that with our clip below:
