The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) congratulates the AA on 10 years of the ‘Think Bikes’ initiative

As seen on many roadside signs and on campaign leaflets in Essex – the Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s (SERP) Vision Zero aspiration is to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads by 2040 and to support this, partners deliver a range of initiatives, including motorbike assessments and training, and motorbike awareness days in schools and colleges.

Last year, SERP’s Extra Eyes enforcement prosecuted 775 drivers for passing too close to a cyclist, and sent advisory letters to a further 58 drivers, through evidence submitted by the public, via journey camera footage.

The last three years in Essex has seen the deaths of 22 motorbike riders and serious injury being suffered by 525. Eight people riding bicycles died and 284 were seriously injured. These people using two wheels make up one third of the deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads.

Nicola Foster, Chair of Safer Essex Roads Partnership, said: “SERP believes the number of riders killed or seriously injured in Essex is unacceptable and we continue to work hard to promote safe speeds, safe roads, and safe road users. We are calling upon all road users to sign our Vision Zero pledge, which will provide us with valuable support to push for much needed change.”
