Road Safety Week 2018 – daily update
Throughout Road Safety Week 2018 we are publishing a daily update of activities and interventions that are taking place place across Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.
Organised by Brake, Road Safety Week (19-25 Nov) aims to inspire schools, organisations and communities to take action and promote road safety messages during the week itself and beyond.
The annual event also provides a focal point for professionals working in road safety to boost awareness of, and engagement with their work.
Using the theme ‘Bike Smart’, Road Safety Week 2018 is seeking to raise awareness about the importance of protecting those on two wheels.
Thursday 22 November – activities continue!
Basildon – Road Safety Week continues at Buttsbury School, with Year 5 pupils taking part in road safety activities.
Braintree – Year 5 pupils at St Andrews Junior School are taking part in road safety activities
Thurrock – Year 6 pupils at Thameside Academy are taking part in training on how to stay safe near to large vehicles – while children at Stanford Primary and Horndon Primary are participating in Bikeability (Level 2).
A Roadster event is taking place at the Harris Academy.
Colchester – Pupils at Prettygate School are participating in Bikeability (Level 2).
Kelvedon – Pupils at St Mary’s School are participating in Bikeability (Level 2).
Billericay – A ‘SERP Day’ is taking place in the town.
Southend – A Community Speed Watch initiative is taking place.
Harwich – A Community Speed Watch initiative is taking place.
Wednesday 21 November – approaching the midway point
Chelmsford – A ‘Surround a Town’ day is taking place in Chelmsford today (pictured below) – an initiative which uses a combination of enforcement and engagement to highlight the importance of safe and legal driving.

As part of ‘Surround a Town’, there is enforcement activity around Chelmer Village, the SERP team is interacting with the public in Chelmsford High Street, and two Community Speed Watch events are taking place at Priory School and Margaretting School (pictured below).

Thurrock – Bikeability Level 2 training is taking place at Stanford Primary and Horndon Primary.
South Woodham Ferrers – Bikeability Level 2 training is taking place at Elmwood Primary School.
Colchester – Bikeability Level 2 training is taking place at Myland School.
Braintree – Braintree College is hosting a ‘College Safety Day’.
Tuesday 20 November – Road Safety Week continues
Thurrock – Year 6 pupils at Warren Primary School are taking part in training near to large vehicles. At Kenningtons Primary, pupils are participating in a ‘Twilight Trail’ – to highlight the importance of ‘be bright, be seen’.
Pupils from Horndon Primary are participating in Bikeability training (Levels 1&2) – as are pupils from Stanford Primary (Level 1).
Colchester – A mini Roadster event, which explains the importance of road safety to pre-drivers, is taking place at Thurstable School.
Tendring – Year 5 pupils at Holland Park School are taking part in a variety of road safety activities – while pupils at Cann Hall Primary are participating in Level 2 Bikeability training.
Canvey Island – Year 5 pupils at Downham Primary School are taking part in road safety activities.
Chelmsford – Victoria House is playing host to a road safety presentation with Batax.
Basildon – Year 5 pupils at Buttsbury School are participating in various road safety activities.
Halstead – The SERP Bus Tour is visiting the Halstead Depot to speak to the Essex Highways operatives based there about driving for work and winter driving (pictured right).
Monday 19 November – what’s happening on day one?
Colchester – Reception children at Kingston Infants School are participating in a road safety workshop.
Thurrock – Year 3 pupils at Kenningtons Primary School are taking part in a road safety activity day. At East Tilbury Primary, pupils are participating in a ‘Twilight Trail’ – to highlight the importance of ‘be bright, be seen’.
Bikeability Level 1 is being taught to pupils at Horndon Primary School; while the more advanced Bikeability Level 2 training is taking place at Stanford Primary School.
Basildon – Monday is a busy day for pupils at Buttsbury School, with Year 5 participating in various road safety activities and Bikeability Level 2 also being taught at the school.
Harlow – Year 5 pupils at Milwards School are taking part in road safety activities.
Tendring – Pupils at Cann Hall School will participate in Bikeability Level 1; while presentations to improve the safety of young drivers will take place at Colchester Institute.
Southend – a road safety display will be on show all week at the Forum, a state-of-the-art library and learning facility in the heart of Southend town centre which is jointly managed by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College.
