Road safety surprise for winning pupils

Thurrock competition winner croppedThere was a surprise waiting for the winners of a road safety competition organised by Thurrock Council’s road safety team when they arrived at their schools on 16 July.

Pedestrian training is undertaken in every primary school in Thurrock to prepare pupils for the area’s busy roads, in a bid to reduce the number of child casualties.

To assess how much a child has learned, and to monitor the project, evaluation forms are given to all Year 6 pupils who participate in the training.

A prize draw is then held to select the winners from the 16 schools taking part, and the council provided a bag of road safety goodies which was presented to the winning pupils by their head teachers.

Councillor Oliver Gerrish, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for transportation, said: “It is essential children are given the appropriate skills and information so they can use our roads safely – lessons that will be with them throughout their lives.”
