SERP is committed to road safety and is actively seeking to educate rather than prosecute drivers who have committed certain road traffic offences such as careless driving or driving without due care and attention when involved in a road collision.

The purpose of the Safe & Considerate Driving (SCD) course is to give eligible offenders the opportunity to attend a course as an alternative to a fine and penalty points to be endorsed on their licence. In some situations it could prevent a summons to attend court being issued.

The courses are only available by referral from the police.

What is the course about?

The course is a mixture of theory and on road practical driving coaching. It aims to allow drivers to look at their driving and introduces practical solutions to help them to avoid being involved in future collisions. It includes group discussions in the theory section and focussed individual coaching during the practical session.

The practical driving section will take place in a modern dual controlled vehicle with a qualified coach. Both manual and automatic vehicles are used.

If you drive a specially adapted vehicle please contact the booking office on 01277 636675 before booking a course.

There is no test to be taken on the course but drivers must fully participate to complete the course.

How long is the course?

The courses are delivered in two parts;

The theory element is of three hours duration and  delivered online by qualified and licensed NDORS trainers.  In addition the practical element will be arranged to take place at a later date.

When are the courses?

The courses are regularly available.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the course is £175.00, payable at the point of booking.

If you have financial difficulties with making this payment at the time of booking, please contact the Essex Booking Office on 01277 636675 (Mon-Fri, 7.30am – 4.00pm)

What do I need to complete the course?

You must bring with you your photo card driving licence as proof of your identity. If you have an old style paper driving licence then you should bring your passport with you.

If you have difficulty with photographic identification please contact the booking office on 01277 636675 before the day of your course as you will not be allowed to attend the course if you cannot produce photographic identification.

Eyesight check – Practical element only

Before the trainer allows you to participate in the practical driving section you will need to pass the standard driving test eyesight check. This means you will need to be able to read a vehicle number plate from 20.5 m (67ft). If you wear glasses to drive please bring them with you. If you fail the eyesight check you will not be able to complete the course and these facts will be reported to the referring police authority.

If you fail the eyesight check you should not drive again until you can pass the eyesight test as you will be committing a driving licence offence and endangering yourself and other road users.

Adverse weather  – Theory element only

The weather will not affect the course as you are able to complete the course in the comfort of your own home.

Adverse weather – Practical element only

During periods of adverse weather it may be necessary to cancel courses at short notice and re-arrange to an alternative date.

Currently all courses are running as scheduled.
