Used cars can be a great purchase as long as you’re prepared for a few breakdowns and you know how to steer clear of skanky bangers.
“If you have your heart set on a car, get it checked out by a proper mechanic,” says BBC sports presenter Manish Bhasin. “If it’s a bargain there is usually a reason. My first car was only £150 and it was a great little motor.”
Why buying used is good…
• Bag a bargain
• Lower running costs
• Niggles less likely – they’ll be ironed out
…and why it’s bad
• Minimal or no guarantee against stuff going wrong
• Extra cost of likely repairs
• You could buy a stinker if you don’t know your stuff
